We are sure that it is really impossible to imagine a New Year's party without clinking of glasses full of champagne. Only champagne? Or shall we fill our glasses with something else?

USDA Proposes Rules to Protect Small Farmers
Last week the USDA proposed three rules to protect family farmers and ensure their fair treatment by processors. The rules are a step in President Obama’s executive order released in April this year, “Steps to Increase Competition and Better Inform Consumers and Workers to Support Continued Growth of the American Economy”, meant to enhance competition in order to help consumers, workers, and small businesses get a fair shake in the economy.
7 Unique All-Natural Gifts That Support Small Farms and Businesses
The holiday season tends to go hand in hand with buying things—and while buying gifts for the people that you care about is nice, mass consumption comes with some drawbacks. Besides spending a lot of money, all the things we buy tend to generate a lot of waste as well. Buying natural products from small-scale sustainable producers is one way to offset your less-than-sustainable purchases and practices this season. Not to mention, everything we’ve compiled on this list is not only natural and sustainable, but also a bit more unique and thoughtful than conventional gifts. By gifting these products, you can do something nice for the ones you love, and support small farmers and businesses at the same time. It’s really a win-win situation.
Organic Standards Board Votes to Exclude Next Generation GMOs
The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) voted unanimously last month to exclude the next generation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from U.S. organic standards. “Traditional” genetic engineering techniques were already excluded from organic standards, however the NOSB will likely continue to update the standards as new technology develops.

Everything You Need to Know About Eating Insects
While eating insects seems more like something you would do only because you lost a bet, that’s not the case in many places. Humans have been eating insects for ages. Now some many are making the argument that insects are “the food of the future”, and the key to tackling hunger, sustainability, and climate change. Some companies and farmers are already getting in on the action.

Know Your Farmer: Lincoln Smith of Forested, a Research Forest Garden
The term “agriculture” tends to elicit images of expansive open spaces with perfectly aligned rows of crops. Lincoln Smith, founder of Forested, has an entirely different vision. Forest farms — or forest gardens, the term preferred by Smith — tend to look more like a forest than a farm. With a background in landscape architecture, Smith has always been interested in the way people relate to the land. He started Forested to research forest gardening methods, market forest foods, train people in forest gardening, design forest gardens, and raise awareness about the practice through tours, classes, and forest-to-table dinners. Smith talked to us about the importance of agroecosystems, why National Parks alone won’t solve our environmental challenges, and what non-farmers should know about growing food.
Food Waste On the Farm and How We All Can Help Avoid It
Food waste seems to be the topic of the moment in regards to sustainable food production. Consumers are being encouraged by advocacy groups to buy with purpose, freeze the excess, and get creative with overly ripe produce. Unfortunately, food losses start on the farm, before the food ever reaches consumers. In fact, roughly 20 percent of fruits and vegetables that are produced will never make it off the farm.
Proposed Guidelines Allow Meat Producers to Define “Humanely-Raised” For Themselves
As if navigating your way around food labels wasn’t already challenging enough, it may get even more confusing. The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is seeking comment on its newly proposed guidelines for animal raising claims made on food labels. Under the guidelines, certain claims would be allowed to be defined by the producers themselves, and thus would mean something entirely different from package to package.
What is Forest Farming? A Sustainable Form of Agriculture
If you’re interested in food and agriculture, you probably know what hydroponics means. You may have even bought hydroponic tomatoes before, which are not entirely uncommon at the average grocery store. The trend is evident: as worldwide concern over food sustainability grows, people are looking towards alternative forms of agriculture. Forest farming — though not a new practice — is one such form.
