WHO IS GAIA?...
A small heritage breed farm in NE Oklahoma, striving to breed the best quality livestock I possibly can, in the most humane way possible. I concentrate on raising animals in as natural a setting as possible, providing lots of fresh air, sunshine and quality feed. I am striving for animals that can do well on a primarily grass-based system.
My Icelandic Sheep are selected with the following traits in mind:
Heat adaptability - the sheep have to be able to survive and do well in Oklahoma's challenging environmental conditions of periods of extreme heat and humidity without excessive intervention.
Parasite resilience/resistance - my flock HAS to be able to survive (and preferably do WELL) coping with the high parasite pressure in Oklahoma. It really is a case of do or die.
Milkiness - extremely important for multiple lambs and for good growth.
Fertility - I expect my ewes to twin reliably and my rams to be vigorous and fertile.
My ultimate goal is to produce well rounded sheep who are vigorous, prolific, and milky with good meat conformation while retaining good quality fleece.
I have a philosophy of conservation breeding and have chosen all my livestock carefully, and with this goal in mind.
I am pleased to announce that all poultry is NPIP approved! I have taken a hiatus on my poultry as I concentrate on my breeding plans for Icelandic Sheep.
