Diane and her husband own and operate Greentree Naturals, a small acreage farm outside of Sandpoint, Idaho. Their farm has been certified organic since 1992. They have been growing for market and selling at the Farmers Market since 1990. Expanding from the farmer's market to supplying upscale restaurants, Greentree Naturals has become a center for summer farm tours, organic gardening workshops and on-farm research. They work with the Community Supported Agriculture model for subscription produce and flowers and have had an active CSA since 1995.
Diane is an experienced farmer mentor who has been offering education, guidance, moral support and encouragement to apprentices/interns they host on their farm. She has been actively involved with the University of Idaho Cultivating Success Program since it began in 1997 and offers academic internships through UI. Diane developed the Farmer Mentor Handbook and a training curriculum that has helped other small acreage farmers become successful farmer mentors. She also worked with the Women, Food and Agriculture Network in Iowa to develop a farmer mentor handbook and farmer mentor training for the Harvesting Our Potential Program in 2012. Diane has provided numerous farmer mentor training sessions across Idaho and Washington. She is an instructor for the Sustainable Small Acreage Farming and Ranching Course at UI and has taught this in the classroom and on-line since 2007.
Diane and Thom share a goal of increasing awareness of sustainable agriculture and organic gardening by supporting other growers as well. This support has taken the form of not only working to make their own business a success, but also speaking, writing and teaching others the lessons they've learned. Diane has written a publication “Selling Produce to Restaurants” now in its third edition printing. She has traveled throughout the western U.S. and Canada teaching assorted Small Farm and Sustainable Agriculture related subjects.
